New Poll Shows Republican Incumbent Michael McCaul Poised for Defeat

Survey reclassifies Texas CD 10: “Leans Red, Turning Blue”

(Austin) —A new independent poll conducted by IVR Polls on June 2nd shows a changing political landscape in Texas’ 10th Congressional District, signaling Democratic nominee Larry Joe Doherty threatens an upset victory in November.

Key Findings

  • It is a 5-point race, with McCaul holding a scant lead, 51.7%, over Doherty’s 46.3%
  • McCaul’s tenuous lead trails by 9 points the lead John McCain holds over Barack Obama and by 5 points the lead John Cornyn holds over Rick Noriega
  • Doherty is doing 7 percentage points better in the Harris County than the previous Democratic nominee Ted Ankrum did in 2006
  • Younger voters, under 40, heavily favor Democrats

“These results reinforce what families in Manor, Katy, Prairie View, Brenham and throughout the district have been saying to me for the past six months,” noted Doherty. “Washington is broken. The people want real leadership that will hold government accountable to them, not the special interests and corporate lobbyists.”

The 10th Congressional District was gerrymandered by Tom DeLay to heavily favor George Bush and a Congressman who would rubberstamp him. Nonetheless, a notable shift is taking place. In 2004, Bush took 62% of the vote the district. In 2006, McCaul was re-elected with only 55% of the vote, and this recent poll shows he has the support of only 51.7% of the district.

The June 2nd telephone poll, conducted by IVR Polls, sampled 528 likely voters and has a margin-of-error of 4.3% (http://ivrpolls.com/).
